In spite of financial problems, Khanh Vinh District Social Service Center has been home for many unfortunates.

Nguyen Thi Bich Trinh, a social worker at Khanh Vinh District Social Service Center, used to be an orphan. Her father left her family when she had not been born. Her mother died when she was only 12 and then she was sent to Khanh Vinh District Social Service Center.

Therefore, she understands deeply orphans’ feelings and emotions. After graduating from Nha Trang Teacher Training College, she decided to work as an educational worker at the center.

Trinh says, “I am so happy and grateful to the center which has provided me family affection, care and pleasures. I will dedicate my heart to help unlucky children to overcome complex about their situations to integrate into society.”

36 orphans, mostly ethnic minority people, are currently in the care of the center. Many have performed well at school. 12-year-old Cao Thi Nhu Thuy, Ca Hon Village, Khanh Binh Commune, Khanh Vinh District, is a sixth-grader.

She was born into a poor family. Her father died when she was a second-grader. Then, her mother could not afford living expenses of Thuy and her younger sister and had to seek help from the center. Since then, they have no longer suffered from hunger. “We have received great care and love here. My mother in Khanh Binh sometimes visits us. She is so happy to see we have grown up healthily,” Thuy says.

Nguyen Thanh Canh, Director of Khanh Vinh District Social Service Center confirms, “All the children here are in pitiful conditions. Many are motherless, fatherless or orphaned. Others are disabled.”

Abandoned in a pagoda, Nguyen Van Chuc was taken to the center which provided him food,  clothes and schooling. He proved to be not only diligent but also helpful. He is presently a construction student in Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen Province and his tuition is sponsored by the center. He is going to graduate in some months.

Reportedly, founded in 1994, Khanh Vinh District Charity House was in charge of taking care of orphans and disabled children. In 2011, Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee established Khanh Vinh District Social Service Center based on Khanh Vinh District Charity House to expand its operation.

Since then, beside orphans, disabled, old and homeless people have also been admitted. VND540,000 meals and VND30,000 worth of living expenses are provided for the children every month. All of them are also covered by medical insurance. In addition, cultural and musical activities together with sight-seeing tours are held for the children.

“Taking care of the children is not simply providing them food and clothes, but caring for their spiritual life, especially inspiring them to overcome difficulties to have a better life,” says Nguyen Thanh Canh. However, more donations are still required for the center to extend support to vulnerable people.
