The second phase of the United Nations’ “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation” (UN-REDD plus) project has been launched in Vietnam.
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is a mechanism under negotiation by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with the objective to mitigate climate change through reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and removing greenhouse gases through enhanced forest management in developing countries.
Some multilateral readiness platforms for REDD + established to give technical and financial support include the UN-REDD Program and the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) housed at the World Bank.
As one of the nations seriously affected by climate change, Vietnam has actively joined efforts with the international community to protect the earth, and developed policies and strategies to cope with climate change. The Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment (MONRE) takes the lead in overall management of the national action program for REDD + approved in June 2012.
Vietnam is chosen to pilot the UN-REDD. It is among UN-REDD partners in the second phase with a non-refundable aid worth about USD 30 million sponsored by the Norwegian Government in December 2012.
Besides, Vietnam gets aid from the U.S.A, Germany, Japan, EU and non-governmental organizations to join REDD+.
The Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development has directed the Forestry Department and related agencies to complete all institutions and techniques for the implementation of REDD+. Besides, the State has also suggested new projects to join Carbon Fund and Bio-Carbon Fund to promote its capability for implementing REDD plus.
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation is collaborative initiative to create a financial value for the carbon stored in forests, offering incentives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for sustainable development.
