According to Director of Nha Trang Bay Management Board Truong Kinh, Nha Trang has marine bio-diversity with fantastic realm of 350 species of coral reef, 222 of fish, 120 of mollusks, 70 of crustaceans and 7 of sea-grass. However, coral reef has decreased to some 78ha, mainly remaining in Hon Mun and Hon Rom. The same thing has happened to mangrove areas.
PhD-Associate Professor Nguyen Tac An, Vice-Chairman of Khanh Hoa Union of Science & Technology Associations addresses 5 main pressures on bio-diversity together with challenges related to financing, access to scientific information, policies, etc.
Other issues include influence of aquaculture, over-exploitation of marine resources, environmental pollution and many more. According to Nguyen Tac An, top priority must be given to bio-diversity as it is a base for achieving other targets.
PhD Nguyen Huu Huan, Nha Trang Oceanography Institute, suggests some solutions to sustainable management of Nha Trang Bay such as specific coastal planning for Nha Trang Bay, coral reef renovation for eco-tourism, construction of anti-erosion and environmental tracking systems on Nha Trang Bay.
According to Pham Van Thom, Khanh Hoa Association for Conservation of Nature & Environment, sea encroachment projects must follow a common suitable design without breaking the natural beauty of Nha Trang Bay. Careful inspection over aquaculture is required to minimize its negative effects on the environment.
The forum is held periodically in June and November, focusing on planning, mechanism, projects for local socio-economic growth; issues related to culture, environment, social security, green development in Khanh Hoa, says Bui Mau, Chairman of Union of Science & Technology Associations.
