Over the past 5 years, the Project 52 on population control in coastal areas has contributed greatly to making a change in public awareness of family planning. Coastal residents have had better access to family planning services since 2009 thanks to the project.

The project 52 has implemented many practical activities on education, counseling and reproductive health care services for salt production workers in Ninh Hoa Town and Cam Thinh Dong Commune, Cam Ranh City; in cooperation with border stations provided health care services to those working at sea; given equipment to off-shore ships in Van Ninh District; held extracurricular activities on population, reproductive health and family planning at high schools in coastal areas, etc.

In addition, the project has focused on pre-pregnancy heath care and disability prevention in newborn infants under the “Welcome to Life” sponsored by Handicap International; in association with Maries Stopes Nha Trang conducted the model “Heath care service and counseling for mothers and children” for staff of industrial zones and coastal residents.

Besides, the project has jointly promoted propaganda in various forms such as leaflets, banners and seminars for over 43,000 people. Especially, counseling has been provided for over 73,000 reproductive age women. Over the past 5 years, the project 52 has provided reproductive heath care and family planning services for residents in coastal areas,  helping to change their behaviors, says Huynh Thi Hien, Temporary Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Population & Family Planning.

Tran Diu An, Binh Lap Village, Cam Lap Commune, Cam Ranh City, says, “I have opportunity to access reproductive health care services right in my village every year and I can get information and advice for a suitable contraceptive method.”

Nguyen Van An, Van Gia Town, Van Ninh District adds, “Population officials come to my village to provide family planning information. I support family planning methods because I want my children have a comfortable life.”

Over 43,000 pregnant women have had access to pregnancy care and treatment, over 132,000 to gynecological examination, over 97,000 to modern contraceptive methods, according to figures from Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Population & Family Planning. Moreover, the project is designed to improve population quality with maternal and child health care, newborn screening for over 3,341, pre-pregnancy health care counseling for 4,000 and so on.

Results have shown that the project has contributed to the decrease in the death rate among mothers, premature babies, abortion cases, helping to improve the population quality and human resources in coastal areas. The project has also helped to strengthen the capacity of access to basic social services in an effort to  improve local residents’ material and spiritual life.
