During these scorching days, beaches along Pham Van Dong Street and Tran Phu Street, Nha Trang City, are crowded with local residents and tourists, thus putting much pressure on the beach rescue force of Nha Trang Bay Management Board.

The beaches stretching for more than 15km are always ideal destinations for revelers and swimmers, especially in summer.

Nguyen Anh Tung warns children of water safety.

Nguyen Anh Tung, Head of the beach rescue team 6, with 10-year-experience, says, “Crowds flock to beaches during this peak month to soak in cool sea water, particularly in the afternoon at the weekend. This keeps us very busy watching and supervising thousands of swimmers in order to prevent drowning and other dangers.”

26-year-old Tran Quoc Tam, the youngest rescue member, says, “I pay special attention to old people and children. I always take buoys with me during my patrol in case they are needed.” Tam, who used to be a fisherman, has joined the rescue team for 4 years.

Nguyen Van Hung, in charge of the beach rescue patrol team says, “We maintain patrols along the beach with a member on each lifeguard tower to respond to requests for water-related rescues to assure the safety of swimmers, especially during rush hours.”

“All rescue members are certified. Besides, to improve their skills, Nha Trang Bay Management Board in association with Surflife Saving Australia in Vietnam will hold a marine rescue training course from September 2014 to February 2015,” says Huynh Binh Thai, Deputy Chief of Nha Trang Bay Management Board.

Reportedly, to increase rescue capacity, Nha Trang City People’s Committee has invested in more equipment, including a 1,500CV motor-boat for the rescue team.

The rescue members have fulfilled their responsibilities in drowning prevention, saving 54 people in 2013 and 30 people since the beginning of the year.
