"Climate-smart" villages are aimed at sustainable agricultural development.

A seminar on communications on climate change was jointly held in Hanoi on November 17-18 by the Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development and the Climate Change, Agriculture & Food Security Regional Program for Southeast Asia (CCAFS-SEA).

Three climate-smart villages will be built in Ma Village, Yen Binh District, Yen Bai Province; My Loi Village, Ky Anh District, Ha Tinh, Province; and in Tra Hat Village, Vinh Loi District, Bac Lieu Province, according to the CCAFS-SEA.

The construction of the villages is aimed at contributing to ensuring food safety and development, boosting agricultural productivity, improving resilience to climate change, and easing global warming by reducing greenhouse emissions from agricultural production activities.

Agriculture around the world can be significantly affected by climate change, and are now teaching farmers new technologies to adapt.  In these villages, people will have access to updated weather information and forecasts via television, radio, SMS, newspapers, etc.

Besides, farmers in these villages will take part in agricultural insurance programs to cover possible damage caused by due to the impact of unfavorable weather conditions resulting from climate change to the cultivation of crops and husbandry of livestock.

In addition, the efficiency of management and use of water sources in irrigation and daily activities is also a vital climate change adaptation option. Residents in these villages will be offered field trips and training focused on smart agricultural production models, so that they can use water sources wisely to cope with climate change effectively and efficiently for sustainable agricultural practice.

Climate-Smart villages allow scientists, farmers and local communities to test new technologies together to assure food security and resilience, improve livelihoods and income for millions of farmers living in high-risk areas which are likely suffer from a changing climate.
