VNEN is a large education project developed by the Ministry of Education & Training in association with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). The learner -centered approach aims at improving teaching and learning capacity in primary schools by stimulating children’s independence and creativity.
A VNEN classroom at Tan Lap Primary School 2, Nha Trang City, is divided into 5 groups. All pupils work in group under the management of a group leader and the class self-management council.
To Dong Anh Khoa, a fifth-grader, says, “We are interested in the new learning model which makes our class environment interesting. We all have chances to present and exchange ideas.”
Similarly, pupils at Dien Dien Primary School, Dien Khanh District, are eager with the new model which helps them to become more self-confident to speak out their own opinions and give comments to their friends’ answers.
Besides, VNEN classes are more beautifully decorated with library and community corners and friends’ mailboxes, creating a more friendly environment for learning and teaching. Nguyen Thi Luyen, Vice-Principal of Tan Tap 2 Primary School says, “ Since the VNEN model was applied in the school year 2012-2013, much progress has been made in promoting students' self-management and self-determination skills. Therefore, the model has received much support from pupils’ parents.”
Piloted at 4 schools since 2011-2012, the model has expanded to 23 primary schools with nearly 8,500 pupils. VNEN model has shown satisfactory results. Pupils have been found to be more self-confident. Especially, ethnic minority pupils have had more chances to reach their full potentials. Education quality has much improved. The class attendance has increased with no dropouts reported recently, according to Ha Van Thong, Chief of the Primary Education Division, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.
Thanks to the VNEN implementation, Khanh Dong Primary School, Khanh Vinh District, has seen a rise in the number of pupils graded good or above, up to 66% from 57%, and class attendance with no dropout. Learners’ communication skills have been promoted. Excellent pupils have increased, up to 83% from 62%.
