Senior citizens are offered congratulations and gifts for their longevity

Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly and local authorities have given great concern and support on providing elder health care and promoting their roles for an active and happy life. Healthcare counseling, check-ups and medical insurance cards have been provided.

35,200 old people were granted free medical insurance cards and over 24,800 were given check-ups and medicines free of charge in 2014.

According to Le Xuan Hanh, Chief of the Representative Board of Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly, a free ocular examination program was held by Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly in association with Khanh Hoa General Hospital and Saigon-Nha Trang Eye Hospital. Over 8,600 old people were given eye test and disease-related information and more than 500 were provided vision screening and cataract surgery free of charge. Over VND5.5 billion worth of the surgery was raised by the Representative Board of Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly. “Most of the patients gain sight after the surgery,” he says.

Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly worked with local authorities to make a list of those above 80 years old to be granted allowances. 19,700 were granted monthly allowances of VND270,000 each in 2014. Nearly 200 disabled, deserted and lonely ones were given care at social service institutions.

Senior social welfare in Khanh Hoa Province helped to promote the elderly to continue making valuable contributions to their communities. On New Year festivals, national holidays, including the Traditional Day for the Elderly (June 6) and the International Day of Older Persons, over 27,800 people aged over 70 were offered congratulations and gifts for their longevity.

Many courses on the law for the elderly were opened to raise public awareness of the rights and responsibilities of the elderly; home and community care. Members of Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly were inspired to join the social campaign “Old people setting good examples for the cause of the national construction and protection”. Older people staying economically and socially active increased and thus they had chances to share their wealth of lifetime experience with younger generations, contributing to the local socio-economic growth. In 2014, over 95% of families with old people were recognized “Cultural families”.

In 2015, we will focus on the implementation of the law for the elderly, hold many activities to take care of old people’s health and promote the program “Old people setting good examples”. Besides, physical, sporting and musical activities continue to be enhanced to help the elderly to remain active, stay healthy, energetic and maintain their independence, contributing to the local socio-economic growth.
