Education and training for ethnic minority communities in Khanh Hoa Province have much improved, contributing to the socio-economic growth in mountainous areas.

Over the past years, the number of ethnic minority students has increased. In 2014 – 2015, 426 ethnic minority people are reported to study at 34 universities, colleges and vocational high schools nationwide, a 15% increase compared with the year 2013 – 2014 and up 27% compared with the 2012 - 2013. Ethnic minority students entering universities account for 21%, colleges 66% and vocational high schools 13%. Most of them are Raglai students (accounting for nearly 68%), followed by the Tay, Nung, E-de, T’rin, Muong, etc.

Since the school year 2013 – 2014, 20 students have been chosen to attend courses at Hue University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture & Forestry and Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Public Administration. The number of student graded good and excellent in the year 2013 – 2014 increased by 3.4% compared with last school year. This showed great effort made by ethnic minority students to overcome difficulties to perform well at school.

In addition, much support has been provided by the province for ethnic minority students. Monthly grants worth VND840,000 each have been offered to students at vocational high schools and VND1,050,000 each to those at universities. Besides, students graded good and excellent have been awarded. Besides, they have also benefited from other preferential policies according to the regulations of the Government.

Hoang Thi Duong Lieu, a Tay ethnic minority student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy, says, ‘The financial support is a great encouragement to me. We will try our best to get better results in study.” Lieu was graded a good student in 2012 – 2013 school year and an excellent student in the 2013 – 2014.

Cao Thi Thu Trang, a Raglai student at Quy Nhon University says the monthly grant is very helpful. She has used the grant to buy textbooks and cover her daily expenses.

The priority polices in training for ethnic minority people have played an important role in contributing to the socio-economic growth in mountainous areas.

Phan Van Dung, Deputy Director of the Department of Education & Training says more career orientation activities are required to provide students with a realistic picture of themselves and the world of work, so that they can choose suitable specialties for their abilities and interests.
