Diep Son has nearly 100 households, living mainly on fish.  They have an unstable life, especially on days when the sea gets rough with high waves.

There is only one dynamo for the whole island, operating from 6pm to 10pm. The electricity wires are damaged due to long time use, causing frequent blackouts. The volunteers have just replaced the old power grid and poles by the new ones.

Nguyen Ngoc Man, Head of Diep Son Village says, “We are all satisfied with the changes. We are no longer worried about frequent blackouts. Besides, a recreational park with seesaws, swings, slides, monkey bars, etc has been constructed for kids to have fun, learn and explore.”

9 year-old Nguyen Thi Tron says “We are so excited about the new playground. I hope there will be more outdoor toys and games so that many children can play at the same time.” 8-year-old Truong Thi Minh rushed out to the playground right after her lunch, “I am very grateful to the volunteers. I have had many new games to play outside,” she says.

Reportedly, the youth volunteers of Nha Trang University and Van Ninh District Youth Communist Association have joined effort in raising funds from individuals and organizations for the project. The construction worth nearly VND100 million includes a 200m2 playground and a 10KW dynamo with new wires, according to Le Cong Lap, Secretary of Nha Trang University Communist Youth Union.

Pham Truc Viet, Secretary of Van Ninh District Communist Youth Union says, “Thanks to effort of 80 members from Nha Trang University and over 15 others from the district, the construction has been completed within 8 days, ahead of schedule.”

Truong Thai Hung, Chairman of Van Thanh Commune People’s Committee expressed his appreciation to the heart of the volunteers with the hope that a solar-energy system would be  installed in Diep Son in the near future, facilitating local residents’ access to various means of communication.
