My first day at the club was so enjoyable with an interesting topic for discussion: “If you are given USD 10 million on condition that you have to leave Vietnam for ever, what is your decision, accepting or refusing?”

12 of us were divided into 3 groups with 4 members each in turn expressing our opinions with the direction of Denny and his wife named Thao. Denny listened to us carefully to correct our pronunciation mistakes and help us to express ourselves smoothly and naturally. Miss Thao could help us with the vocabulary or simple structures.

Foreigners are invited to join his club. The visitors vary from a Russian family with a cute 6-year-old son to a French girl who could speak a little Vietnamese, etc. Through stories told by people of different nationalities, we can understand about various cultures as well as know about their thoughts and feelings about Vietnam.

“At first I intended to charge for joining the English language club and the money would go to the charity. However, many young people coming to my club have modest incomes, so I decide the club will open free for everybody,” he says.

Reportedly, after completing a contract with a university in China, Denny intended to continue his teaching career in his wife’s hometown in Vietnam.

After a tour to Nha Trang, he grows to love the beautiful beach city, so his family moved to Nha Trang. He opens English classes at home. He finds that Vietnamese learners are intelligent and creative but their English speaking and listening skills are not good.

He then decides to open an English language club every Sunday so that learners can have more chances to practice their English without worrying about fees.

Denny is also nursing a plan to send volunteers to help charity houses and centers in need and the volunteers will be taught English free of charge.

Denny says, “In a foreign country there is a community of locals who provide mutual support using their own skills. A doctor examines a carpenter and the carpenter then builds furniture for an electrician who makes electrical repair for the doctor. The community does not depend on money, but mutual support and sharing, to fulfill basic needs.

I have no money but I can teach English to young people who will volunteer to help charity houses and centers.”

Denny is loved and admired by many young locals for his humanitarian thoughts and good deeds inspired by his great sentiments towards Nha Trang beach city.
