Since 2013, Khanh Hoa Tuberculosis & Lung Diseases Hospital has been equipped with modern techniques and machines. Many physicians have been sent to take training courses to master advanced technologies and they have successfully developed many medical subjects at the hospital.

Typical new technologies include Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube- MGIT, Endoscopy by flexible bronchoscopy, Gene – Xpert and PCR.

According to Huynh Minh Tam, Deputy Director of the hospital, advanced technologies have helped to detect mycobacteria early, reduce cost as well as minimize the spreading to the community.

Two other technologies namely Gene – Xpert and PCR began to be developed at the hospital in late 2014 and early 2015.

The Gene Xpert is a cartridge-based, automated diagnostic test that can identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA and resistance to rifampicin. This means that it can tell us two things: whether or not a person has tuberculosis and whether the tuberculosis that the person has can be treated with rifampicin. The test is quick and only takes about two hours.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) allows looking at the structure of the genes. If there are tuberculosis bacteria in the sample, the machine will detect their DNA and automatically multiply it.

Thanks to technological application boost, the hospital has much improved the tuberculosis & lung disease detection and cure. The number of patients searching for treatment at the hospital increased from 19,000 in 2012 to 21,500 in 2014.

“In the time to come, the hospital plans to continue sending physicians to attend technological courses and inviting experts to the hospital for technical transfer under the project 1816 by the Ministry of Health. We hope our measures will help meet the requirement for mastering new techniques for better diagnosis and treatment,” Huynh Minh Tam says.
