In recent years, climate change has become a global concern as it has influenced all socio-economic sectors, including the strategic resources of water, food and energy. Climate change is believed to deter and threaten the sustainable development of human beings.

This year’s World Meteorological Day is themed “Climate knowledge for climate action”. The event is held annually on March 23.

Activities in celebration of the special day include education to raise public awareness of hydrometeorology and hydrometeorological hazards and disasters, specially in the context of increasingly severe consequences of climate change, so that timely prevention plans will be made to minimize damages; effectively protect and manage water resources for sustainable socio-economic growth.

Vo Anh Kiet, Director of Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center says the local hydrometeorological forecasting has much improved. New technologies have been applied with modern machinery and equipment, including radar networks, satellites, pilot stations, transmitters and receivers, using the models HRM, MM5, MIKE 11m etc.

Besides, the center has had access to weather forecast information and materials from many developed countries such as Japan, China, the USA and so on.

The local hydro-meteorological forecasts have helped give warnings and advocatory for the disaster prevention and preparedness, socio-economic development.

To innovate and improve the quality of hydro-meteorological forecasts, the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center has taken many measures, especially advanced technology application.

Khanh Hoa and other southern central provinces are faced with drought and prolonged hot days caused by ENSO warm phase  known as El Niño.

Dry months in Khanh Hoa are predicted to come early with the rainfall below the average annual rate. Khanh Hoa Province is forecasted to cope with a severe drought and water shortage in the following dry months.

Therefore, effective measures are required to combat the drought and raise pubic awareness of water and electricity saving and conservation; forest fire risk, etc, especially during the peak of the dry season 2015.
