Plastic bags are common in everyday life.

According to scientists, plastic bags cause serious hazards to the health of humans and animals and have negative impact on the environment. Despite the awareness of the hazard, many shoppers still use plastic bags because of their habits. Changing people's attitude and habit of using plastic bags on a large-scale in everyday life will contribute greatly to the environmental reservation.

Dien An Commune Women’s Association (Dien Khanh District) is known as one of the leading organizations to take the lead in encouraging women to reduce using plastic bags. “We have founded a club namely ‘Minimizing plastic bag use’ with many practical activities to raise public awareness of bad effects plastic bags on the environment. Frequent public education is required to reduce the consumption of plastic bags,” says Nguyen Thi Thuy Nga, Chairwoman of Dien An Commune Women’s Association.

Le Thi Kim Oanh, a club member says, “Our club is committed to encouraging everybody to reduce the use of plastic bags. However, our message cannot reach women who are not club members.”

According to Nguyen Van Thang, Chief of the Taxpayer Support & Propaganda Office, Khanh Hoa Taxation Department, in 2010, the National Assembly issued  the Law on Environmental Taxes. Accordingly, plastic bags are taxed at VND30,000-VND50,000 per kilogram.

Maximark Nha Trang Trade Center has used environmental friendly bags in all its chain since its foundation day. “Environmental friendly bags are quite expensive, VND110,000/kg, but we still determine to respond to the call for reducing plastic bag use for the environmental sake. However, environmental friendly bags have not been commonly used in other places due to their high cost,” says Doan Thi Tho, Director of Maximark Nha Trang Trade Center.

According  to PhD Ngo Dang Nghia, Director of Institute for Biotechnology & Environment, Nha Trang University, eco-friendly bags are biodegradable, easy to be broken up in a natural environment. However, they are still expensive, so they are not used by many people. Support polices for environment friendly bag producing enterprises are required to make green products cheaper and more efficient for use.
