Life skill education is an important goal of educational activities, especially at primary schools. This is also mentioned in the Resolution No. 29-NQ/TW on fundamental and comprehensive innovation in education.

In the 2014 – 2015 school year, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training piloted a life skill education program for 25,350 students in 794 classes at 40 primary schools in Khanh Hoa Province, according to Le Thuy Phe, Deputy Chief of the department of education & Training.

The teaching program is based on the textbook “Life skill practice” by the Vietnam Education Publishing House.

Life skill education is designed to help children to be aware of basic essential skills that are developed during their relationships at home and in societies. Life skill groups include motivation for personal goals: initiative, engagement, willingness, commitment, and a drive to pursue interests and personal development; independent living skills and self-reliance; social skills; relationship skills and values, etc.

They are taught to promote some communicative skills which support behaviors that enable them to take greater responsibility for our own lives; by making healthy life choices, helping them to be more self confident to join school activities and so on.

However, there were some difficulties that made skill education not really effective as expected. Some teachers showed to be confused in lesson organization. Life skill classes were too much theoretical, etc. Therefore, some improvements and adjustments to the teaching material should be made.

The life skill education program is expected to be expanded to all primary schools in Khanh Hoa Province in the academic year 2015-2016. The program will be piloted at some main schools in the two districts of Khanh Son and Khanh Vinh. The department plans to provide training for class organization, teaching material use, time management, etc.
