Nha Trang City People’s Committee has just held a bike parade themed “Protecting smoke-free Nha Trang City” with the participation of nearly 2,000 students and public sector staff and young people.

Many young propagandists admitted that in spite of many anti-smoking posters set up in public places, they had not paid much attention. However, when engaged in the propaganda activities, they have become more aware of health hazards of smoking, especially on negative smokers and many promised to persuade others to reduce or quit smoking.
Liubov Svirkova, a Russian tourist says, “I am so impressed by the way of anti-smoking propaganda. I support it”.
MA Phan Thi Hai, Deputy Director of the Fund for Tobacco Control, the Ministry of Health says, “Smoking is one of the world’s leading cause of death.”
According to a survey by the Ministry of Health in 2012, people in Vietnam spent VND22,000 billion annually on tobacco and simultaneously they paid over VND23,000 billion on the treatment of diseases caused by smoking.
“Nha Trang is a famous tourist city. Therefore, building a smoke-free environment means much in terms of community health protection and tourist attraction. The event is committed to attracting the engagement of individuals, residents, tourists and organizations in building smoke-free Nha Trang City,” adds MA Phan Thi Hai.
Over the past years, thanks to the support of the Vietnam Public Health Association and the Ministry of Health, Nha Trang City has implemented many anti-smoking activities such as propaganda campaigns, focusing on strengthening enforcement of smoke-free policies at schools, workplace, coach stations with non-smoking signs set up in public places, etc.
Nguyen Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of Nha Trang City People’s Committee says, “More joint effort, especially by young people, is required to maintain an attractive and healthy environment in Nha Trang City.”
