Over the past 4 years, Vinh Thai Commune Women’s Association, Nha Trang City has brought many job opportunities to local women with the model of weaving handicraft bags.

According to Dang Thi Kim Duyen, Chairperson of Vinh Thai Commune Women’s Association, the model of handicraft bags was formed 4 years ago by the family of Pham Thi Khanh Bang in Thai Thong 1 Village. The association has offered her a loan of VND28 million to expand her production to provide work for more local people.

A weaver named Pham Thi Than in Thai Thong 1 Village has a small grocery store. In her free time, she makes bags for Khanh Bang and earns VND2-3 million a month.

Mai Thi Huyen Tran in the same village says, “I am a housewife. I spend my spare time making handicraft bags and can get VND1 million monthly.”

The model has also provided opportunities for students to learn and practice handicraft skills; and get earning during their summer vocation. Ngo Thi Ngoc Tram, an eighth-grader says, “I can earn VND500,000-7000,000 a month from making souvenir bags. I will save money to pay my tuition.”

Do Thi My Tuyen, a tenth-grader says, “This is the third summer vocation I have been engaged in the crafts work. Now, I can make a handicraft bag faster and can earn VND900,000 a month to help my parents.”
Reportedly, about 20 women and girls are working for the workshop. They can do the craft at the workshop or at home.

According to Dang Thi Kim Duyen, most of the local women used to live on making sedge mats and doing farming work. However, the agricultural land has much decreased and the sedge mat weaving has faced the risk of oblivion by the time. Therefore, the model is very helpful as it can provide jobs for many local residents. In the time to come, the association plans to offer an additional loan of VND20 million from the rural job creation fund to expand the production to provide more work opportunities.

According to Pham Thi Khanh Bang, weaving handicraft bags is quite easy. Only few days of training and practice is needed. The crafts work can help many families to increase income, especially during their free post-harvest time.
