Leaving the hometown, Phu Tho, to settle in Phuoc Dong Commune in 1990 with empty hands, Nguyen Thi Gia’s family (Phuoc Thuong Hamlet, Phuoc Dong Commume, Nha Trang City) faced a lot of difficulties. However, with their high determination to overcome difficulties together with their hard working, at present, Gia’s family has not only escaped poverty, gotten rich but also created jobs for tens of local laborers.

In the first days living in the new place, Gia and her husband had to strive to make a living by working in the cemetery, going to the forest to cut wood and make charcoal. They worked very hard to raise their three children. Living in a thatched hut caused Gia’s family many troubles in the bad weather conditions.

Toiling hard for a long time but could not go out of the poverty, Gia discussed with her husband to make a better living. They used their savings and the money borrowed from the relatives and the commune women’s association to breed pigs and chickens. At the first time raising the livestock, Gia and her husband faced many difficulties due to their lack of experience. The livestock kept dying of epidemic diseases. However, they were persevered through all the difficulties.

They learned from other people’s experience, books, the media and economic models in and outside the commune. They also often joined the training classes about farming and breeding techniques. Thanks to their efforts, the livestock of Gia’s family grew well, bringing them a high income. With the bigger capital, Gia’s family could upgrade the farm’s facilities, rear oxen, dig fish pond. They also planted vegetables which have earned them another income. Besides, Gia’s family has taken full advantage of livestock’s manure in order to reduce the expenses for fertilizer, food for fishes and build biogas cellars.

At present, the model garden-pond-barn helps Gia’s family to earn a stable annual income (VND100 to VND150 million). They now have a three-storey house with many living facilities.

“I love my work very much. I spend most time of a day on working. To me, time is money. I have never been discouraged. I have always tried to overcome the difficulties,” said Gia.

The economic model of Gia’s family has not only helped to stabilize their income but also created jobs for ten laborers in the locality with an average income of VND3 million per person per month. In addition, Gia helped seven households in the hamlet to go out of poverty through offering financial supports and business instructions.

Phung Anh Dung, Gia’s husband, has been awarded the title “good farmer” at the city and provincial level for many years.

Gia has also been an active member of Phuoc Dong Commune Women’s Association. She has been given many certificates of merit for her excellent in developing family economic and doing farming. Gia’s family has also been acknowledged as “cultured family” for years.
