Nguyen Hien Junior High School, Nha Trang City has outstood with practical activities to help its staff and students to stay tobacco-free.

Vu Thanh Phuong, the Trade Union Chairperson of Nguyen Hien Junior High School Trade Union says, the tobacco control strategies have been implemented since 2007 when the Instructions No. 56 was issued by the Ministry of Education & Training.
The school has founded the Steering Board for Tobacco Control with specific assignment for every group and individual especially since 2012 when Nha Trang was selected to build a smoke-free city.
The school management board has helped its staff to be fully aware of lawful documents on tobacco control. Various propaganda activities have been organized to raise all staff, students and their parents’ awareness of harmful effects of smoking over personal health and the community, and benefits of smoke-free environment. Social evils prevention and control pledges have been signed.
Since 1980, Nguyen Hien Junior High School has been awarded the excellent title at provincial level successively. The school was awarded a certificate of merit by the Prime Minister in 2003-2004, the third-class Labor Medal in 2007-2008 and the 2nd class Labor Medal in 2012-2013.
Nguyen Hien Junior High School has been recognized by Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee for meeting the third level educational standard and awarded certificates of merit and emulation flags for many successive years.
The school has strengthened the enforcement of smoke-free policies with non-smoking signs put in easily seen places, etc. Thanks to the great effort, the school has created a tobacco-free environment and the number of smokers who are teachers has decreased from 4 to only 1. Many staff, teachers, students and their parents have become non-smoking law propagandists for their families and communities..
In the time to come, the school plans to continue tobacco control propaganda and education through extracurricular activities, flag ceremonies, class meetings, forums, play-acting, etc. Besides, teachers are required to integrate anti-smoking education in their lessons to help students to be aware of harmful effects of tobacco and smoking on human health and the environment; and punishment for cases of violation.
