The main activity was the drawing contest. Full of imagination and artistic sensitivity, children drew colorful pictures within just 60 minutes about the nature surrounding their daily life and how to protect it, delivering various messages towards global environment.

Pointing to her painting depicting kids growing trees beside buildings, Nguyen Minh Anh, a sixth-grader explained, “Trees provide shade and beauty, so I hope all of us will plant more trees.”

Drawing many people joining clean-up effort on a riverside, Ly Khai Oanh, a fourth-grader wished to deliver a message of joining hands in protecting clean water from pollution which is harmful to human health. Besides drawing, children were also interested in play-acting themed “Protecting clean water is to protect our life”.

The children disguised themselves as the Jade Emperor, God of thunder, Kitchen God, Gods of Education, Health, Environment, etc to express their concerns about environmental pollution and some bad habits, including littering and their consequences. Especially they sought out  some suggestions to reduce environmental pollution such as more dustbins placed at schools, commendation for environmental protection acts; more environmental protection propaganda and education, etc.

In addition, children were also excited about environmental-related puzzles with nice rewards offered to winners. The puzzles focused on an environmental topic and actions we can take such as how to identify clean water, effects of waste on the environment, roles of forests and so on.

Reportedly, the education event is in a series of education activities required by Khanh Hoa Department of Educating & Training on clean water; environmental and personal hygiene in 2015. Implemented in 2014, the propaganda model has been expanded by the Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training to 61 schools, including 15 primary schools, in Khanh Hoa Province.

The propaganda activities have varied based on students’ ages. They have included hand washing practice for primary age children; painting and puzzles on an environmental topic for primary and junior high schools; a forum on environmental hygiene and messages about hygiene, water and sanitation conditions.

Phan Thi Hue, Office of Scientific Management & Student Affairs, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training says, the education program is designed to raise awareness of personal and environmental hygiene as well as responsibilities to improve hygiene, water and sanitation conditions; and thus everyone can be protected from diseases, contributing to the achievement of the national target on clean water and rural environmental hygiene, period 2012-2015.
