The Union of Friendship Organizations has just celebrated its 65th anniversary (November 17, 1950-2015). On November 17, 1950, President Ho Chi Minh sent a letter to the Congress on the establishment of the Vietnam World Peace Protection Committee and November 17 has become the traditional day of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations.

During years of struggle for national independence and national defense, President Ho Chi Minh paid great attention to the development of the friendship between Vietnam and all other countries, calling for international support against invasion and conquest. The international friends’ support was such a great encouragement to Vietnamese people that they were not alone in the struggle for justice.
In the new revolutionary stage, important resources for the national construction and development include international solidarity, cooperation for mutual benefit; and proactive integration as confirmed in documents by the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, stating the close cooperation between the Party’s foreign affairs, the State’s diplomacy and public diplomacy; between political diplomacy and economic and cultural diplomacy; between foreign affairs and national defense and security.
In pursuance of the implementation of foreign policy on diversification and multilateralization of external relations, it is important for Vietnam to create unity in actions by all forces and components involved foreign affairs, firstly the close link between foreign affairs and national defense, security, economy and culture. Sound national defense, security and thriving economy and culture are the strength for foreign affairs, including public diplomacy activities.
According to Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial Union of Friendship Organizations Ly Ba Lin, various activities to mark the traditional day include talks on public diplomacy tasks with the participation of the Union of Friendship Organizations of the Central region and the Highlands; photo exhibitions on public diplomacy, column of the 65th anniversary of Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations on its website, publication of a special issue on the 65th anniversary, etc.
Particularly, the anniversary ceremony held in Nha Trang City on November 12, 2015 with the participation of over 150 representatives provides a good chance for foreign affairs officials to meet and review 65 years of construction and public diplomacy development. Outstanding individuals and groups with great achievements were honored and awarded on this occasion.
