One of the first-prize winning project namely “Environment is life” by students from Nguyen Van Troi High School, Nha Trang City features land, air and water pollution facts; causes and solutions. Especially, the students have studied about their local environment and joined clean-up effort to send a message of small actions for electricity and water saving; and plastic bag use reduction, etc to raise public awareness of environmental preservation.
Another first-winning project is the mosquito repellent deodorization using extract from Pandan leaves and Basil by students from Nguyen Trai High School, Ninh Hoa Town. Student Pham Thi Thao Trang has created many kinds of cheap and natural mosquito repellent deodorization which offer a potent barrier to mosquitoes, without any adverse health effects. “I will try to develop stronger and stiffer mosquito repellent with longer shelf-life,” she promises.
The “smart dustbin” by students Nguyen Quang Huy and Le Van Quoc from Ngo Gia Tu High School, Cam Ranh City has also won the first prize. After 2 months of steady labor with the support of teachers, the two students have designed a multi-functional dustbin, including an automatic lid, trash collection, vacuum and self-moving garbage. Nguyen Quang Huy and Le Van Quoc also hope to launch into the market a more convenient multi-functional product than a robot vacuum or other smart dustbins.
“Various products have shown students’ reactivity in design. The contest is expected to be expanded to other education levels to further promote young people’s initiatives,” says Teacher Nguyen Van Nam, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Van Ninh City.
Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has implemented many environmental protection activities. This contest has offered a creation experience activity for that purpose. Through the contest, students will be more aware of the meaning and importance of environmental protection and how to respond to environmental issues; and thus, they will get more knowledge and skills for sustainable use of natural resources. Environmental protection is needed to be integrated in extracurricular activities to serve as a platform on which students can meet, share and promote their creativity, contributing to innovation in learning and teaching methods, according to Tran Quang Man, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.
