The National Action Month on Population and Vietnam Population Day (December 26) scheduled to take place from now to the end of December 2015 are themed “ the community joins hands in elderly care”. The event aims to deliver a message of commitment to elderly care to assure older citizens’ happy and healthy life as well as promote their valuable contribution of wise and experience to the society.

Vietnam is in its golden stage of population growth. However, the older population is growing fast. The transition time from the aging population to the aged population is estimated to be much shorter in Vietnam than in developed countries. Statistics show that the aged accounted for 10% of the population in 2011 and then up to 10.5% in 2014 with the 60 year olds and over in Khanh Hoa Province making up over 10% which is still on the increase.

Propaganda will be boosted to raise public awareness of the aging population to make sure that the issue is taken into consideration in all provincial development programs and policies; diversify and improve elder care services; assure social security with the construction of homes for the elderly, medical insurance and periodic check-ups.

Besides, the Branch for Population & Family Planning will organize more workshops and talks to provide the aged with health care knowledge and skills for physical health and emotional well being; promote their roles in society; and encourage them to get engaged in suitable social activities.

Small-size families have become more popular. That means kids may have less benefit from the bond with their grandparents. Therefore, clubs for grandparents, fathers and sons, etc are required to be expanded to keep close family relationships as well as provide more activities for the aged.

Besides the celebration of conferences, workshops, talks and sporting festivals, banners, posters, writings and articles are really essential to promote the community’s effort to maintain adequate levels of service quality and efficiency, seniors’ roles; and adapt to aging population. Apart to medical examination and  warm clothes provided for the elderly. Parades with loudspeakers will be held through main streets to publicize messages of senior care as the valuable tradition as well as behaviors to promote healthy aging.
