The hand washing contest held at Phuoc Thinh Nursery School, Nha Trang City drew the participation of nearly 200 children. The event opened with greeting performance, including singing, dancing and acting themed water saving, and personal hygiene. In the knowledge presentation, children were eager to answer questions about their daily life related to environmental and personal hygiene. After that, they had to perform 6 steps of proper hand washing. The event was designed to help young children to know measures to take to reduce the spread of diarrhea and respiratory illness, etc to stay healthy.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga, Principal of Phuoc Thinh Nursery School says hand washing is really the best defense against many kinds of bacteria and viruses to protect health. The contest also aimed to raise public awareness of child care and education; as well as the collaborative partnerships among schools, families and the community.

“The contest not only helps kids to know how to wash their hands properly with soap at school  but also engages their parents in hand washing guidance at home. I myself will follow the hand washing steps to set an example for my child,” says Mother Pham Kieu Huong.

The hand washing contests were held at 14 nursery schools, apart from Phuoc Thinh School. The proper hand washing guidance was integrated into clean water, environmental and private hygiene education. Besides, banners, posters and paintings were hung up to raise public awareness of clean water and environmental protection.

Reportedly, the event was under the 2015 propaganda project launched by Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training on clean water, environmental and private hygiene. The program was held by nursery, primary and high schools, each with suitable activities, for example painting contests at primary schools, knowledge quiz or forums at high schools. Besides, some environmentally-friendly facilities for hand wash have been built thanks to public participation funding at some schools.

“Not all children know how to wash their hands properly. The contest helps to teach children the importance and techniques of proper hand washing effectively,” says Phan Thi Hue, Office of Science Management & Student Affairs, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training, adding that “after the contest, schools need to make proper hand washing to be students’ daily habit to protect their health through various propaganda activities on clean water, environmental and private hygiene."
