The learner –centered method helps students to be more active and confident. Children all have chances to present and exchange ideas. The model has been applied for children from grade 2 to grade 5 so far. Students completing their curricula reached over 97% last school year, says Nguyen Van Sy, Principal of Khanh Nam Primary School. .

Hoang Thi Hong Nhung, a 5th grader at Khanh Nam Primary School, says, “More visual aids are used, so our class is more interesting and fun. We feel more confident to raise hands to answer questions in class. I like this teaching method.”

Children have been found with more progress and confidence in study. The learning model has promoted classroom interaction and stimulates kids’ independence and creativity. “However, the teaching method is quite new, so children need about 2 months to get used to it,” says Vu Van Hai, a teacher of Khanh Nam Primary School.

Khanh Vinh Town Primary School has also implemented the VNEN model in this school year. The model has been implemented for 14/ 19 classes from grade 2 to grade 5. After 3 months of implementation, the model has proved more effective than the traditional one, according to Principal Huynh Tan Loc.

Children have become more active with self-management skills and their communication and life skills have also developed. However, in Khanh Vinh District, there remain some difficulties due to students’ financial hardship and Vietnamese language skill barrier of ethnic minority children, especially those at grade 2.

Pham Ngoc Cuong, Deputy Chief of Khanh Vinh District Division of Education & Training says, “We will raise funds from Parents’ Associations and benefactors to make bookshelves to provide books for  disadvantaged children. More effort will be taken to promote children’s schooling and communication in Vietnamese for ethnic minority students.”

VNEN model has been developed at 5 primary schools namely Khanh Nam, Khanh Dong, Khanh Binh, Song Cau and Khanh Vinh Town; and is expected to run at 8 schools (accounting for 50% of local schools) by the 2016-2017 school year and then at all schools by the 2017-2018 or 2018-2019 at the latest, according to a leader of Khanh Vinh District Division of Education & Training.
