Through extracurricular activities, students have a chance to have fun with learning and improve their English language. This is also one of the requirements for innovation in teaching and learning foreign languages.

The 2015-2016 English Language - Public Speaking Contest has been held for the first time at provincial level with the participation of 69 short listed students. The 2-day event covered such topics as education, environment, entertainment, health, friendship and family. Many contestants had great impression by their confidence with smart and witty answers.
“The contest gives me an opportunity to practice and improve my listening and speaking skills, enrich my English language and thus help inspire English learning,” says Nguyen Pham Nguyen Hoang from Au Co Junior High School, Nha Trang City. Most of the contestants met English language ability requirements and some showed their competence in listening and speaking skills with quick response to questions, accurate pronunciation and fluency, according to the organizing board.
Tran Quang Man, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training says, "The contest has attracted the participation of many students across the province. All the schools, especially in remote areas, have made great effort in preparation for the contest and thus gained satisfactory results. This is also a chance for teaching and management staff to evaluate English for innovation in teaching and learning method, focusing on communicative skill practice."
Apart from public speaking contests for high schools, Khanh Hoa Department of Department of Education & Training has held many other activities to promote English learning such as public speaking contests for English language centers, English language days, Internet-based Olympic English, etc which have contributed to the innovation in teaching and learning; and promotion of learners’ interest and motivation to learn and practice English.
Thai Nguyen High School is one of the leading schools in organizing English language activities, including English speaking days when teachers and students communicate completely in English about familiar topics. According to Principal Nguyen Tu, the activities have provided a language environment for students to meet, learn and practice; and thus inspire their learning English. The English language extracurricular activities are really helpful, contributing to improving foreign language teaching and learning.
