Applications for electric bike registration have increased significantly at the Road and Rail Traffic Division, Khanh Hoa Public Security. Statistics show that 1,148 electric bikes have been registered to apply for number plates.
“I bought an electric bike 2 years ago. The registration procedure is simple without fee. Registered vehicles can be tracked in case of theft,” says a resident named Nguyen Van Thanh in Vinh Ngoc Ward, Nha Trang City. Ngoc Lan, a student at Herman Gmeiner Nha Trang School says, “I often go to school on this bike, so I must follow the regulation on electric bike registration.”
The electric bike registration is required under the Circular 54. The registration fee and many other documents are exempted from December 7, 2015 to June 30, 2016. Specifically, the owner needs to fill a registration form, submit a copy of his family book, present the original and valid identification document. After the above period, invoice, register fees and verification documents will be required for registration, according to Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Phan Van Cuong, Deputy Chief of the Road and Rail Traffic Division, Khanh Hoa Public Security.
Electric bikes are mostly used by students and many have not registered their vehicles yet. “Electric bike owners violating traffic rules will be fined and informed of the registration regulation as well,” says Lieutenant-colonel Nguyen Trong Thang, Chief of Nha Trang City Traffic Police Team.
Teacher Tran Dang Quang, Deputy Principal of Herman Gmeiner Nha Trang School says, “At a flag ceremony every Monday, the school educates students to follow traffic rules and electric bike registration regulation. High school students are not allowed to use motor bikes.”
Reportedly, Nha Trang City People’s Committee has directed its divisions and People’s Committees of wards and communes to boost electric bike registration and management in Nha Trang City. Local People’s Committees have asked electric bike shops to inform their customers of the registration regulation. From July 1, owners of unregistered electric bikes will be subject to fines worth VND80,000 - VND1 million and other supplementary forms of punishment, according to Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Phan Van Cuong.
