Strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation on child injury and accident prevention

Khanh Hoa People's Committee has just issued a plan on preventing children from accidents and injuries in Khanh Hoa...

Khanh Hoa People’s Committee has just issued a plan on preventing children from accidents and injuries in Khanh Hoa, period 2016-2020.

Child deaths from accidents and injuries have decreased over the past 3 years of the implementation of the plan on preventing children from accidents and injuries in Khanh Hoa, period 2013-2015. Local departments and agencies have paid more concern on the cooperation on the implementation of the plan. The public awareness of child injury and accident has improved. Much effort has been made to build safe environments in families, schools and the community to reduce risks of accidents and injuries and satisfactory results have been gained, according to Trinh Thi Hop, Vice-Chairperson of Khanh Hoa Department of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs.

However, reducing child deaths from injuries and accidents, especially drowning and traffic accidents, is considered as the most challenging target in the implementation of the 2016-2020 plan because of many reasons, including limited awareness of law; lack of child care and protection knowledge and skills; insufficient concern over child injury and accident prevention in families; few opportunities for children to learn swimming, limited funding for child injury and accident prevention; insufficient infrastructures for swimming classes, intermittent traffic safety education, risk of drowning at construction sites with no signs and barriers, etc.

Many measures are required to be taken to promote the effectiveness of the plan on preventing children from accidents and injuries in Khanh Hoa, period 2016-2020 in Khanh Hoa. They include strengthening the leadership, direction and responsibility of the Communist Party and Government for the prevention and control of child injuries and accidents; promoting propaganda, education and social mobilization to raise awareness of the prevention of accidents and  injuries for children in families, schools and communities; raising capacity of child care and protection officials and collaborators, etc.

Simultaneously, great effort will be made to build safe houses, safe schools and safe communities, preventing children from accidents, injuries and drowning; assuring waterway traffic and safety regulations in aquatic environments; regularly inspecting the enforcement of laws, policies and standards on child injury and accident prevention with punishment applied for cases of violation; strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation on the prevention of accidents and injuries for kids.
