Dengue cases have decreased significantly in Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa Province since the beginning of the year compared with the same period last year. However, 433 hospitalized cases have been reported. Therefore, many measures have been taken to prevent the disease, according to Doan Duc Minh, Deputy Head of Van Ninh District Team for Preventive Health Care, Khanh Hoa Province.

Dengue outbreaks occur every year during the rainy season in June, July, October and November. The disease is often common in the communes of Van Khanh, Van Long, Van Phuoc, Van Hung, Van Thang, Van Luong and Van Gia Town, especially in disadvantaged communities lacking in water supplies and where residents have to depend mostly on water stored in earthen jars.
Van Ninh District Medical Center has made space treatment against mosquitoes in Tan Dan 1 Village, Van Thang Commune; Long Hoa Village, Van Long Commune; Tan Phuoc Nam Village, Van Phuoc Commune; Vinh Yen Village, Van Thanh Island Commune; and given guidance for local residents to take precautions, including using mosquito nets; destroying mosquito-breeding sites around homesteads, etc.
Residents in Tan Dan 1 Village have become more aware of the disease prevention. ‘We have not had access to the running water system, so we mainly depend on water stored in jars. Dengue epidemic occurred here last year, so we become very cautious now. We regularly clean and rinse water jars, sleep in mosquito nets, etc,” says a woman named Vo Thi Thu Le.
Dengue prevention and control have been defined as a regular task with much effort made since the beginning of the year to prevent Van Thang Commune from dengue epidemic. Besides propaganda on mass media, local leaders have assigned specific tasks to the Party cell, Fatherland Front Village Committee, mass organizations such as Women's Union, Farmers’ Association and Youth Union; integrated propaganda into regular meetings and activities. Members are required to join clean-up in their communities and propaganda effort, according to Huynh Van Hoa, Vice Chairman of Van Thang Commune People’s Committee.
The unfavorable weather conditions from the early June are advantageous to the reproduction of the dengue virus. After insecticide spraying, the district medical team will cooperate with communes and the town to kill mosquito larvae weekly and monthly as larvicide application and space treatment are considered as the most effective dengue prevention method.
