All members of Van Thanh Blood Donors’ Club have just joined the blood donation in the 2016 Red Journey program to Khanh Hoa. A member named Bui Huu Minh Hai, Dien Khanh District says, “My father is sick and regularly hospitalized. One day, he was in need of the transfusion of 2 units of blood platelets for emergency use. I called for help to the club via the Facebook. 10 minutes later, some members of the club came to Khanh Hoa General Hospital to donate blood platelets. My father was saved and then I registered to join the Blood Donors’ Club.”

Bui Huu Minh Hai has donated blood 5 times, including once for emergency use. He has also mobilized his friends to join blood donation. Nguyen Hong Thiet has joined the club for 2 years and donated blood 28 times, including many times for urgent need. Earlier, he had joined blood donation campaigns held by Nha Trang University many times. One day, he read the call for urgent blood donation to save patients and thanks from recipients who had been cured thanks to the blood transfusion on Facebook. He decided to join the good deed.

Bich Van, Huu Thien, Quoc Khoi and Minh Nhat know about the campaign of the club via its Facebook page. After 1 year joining the campaign, they have helped save many lives and offered clothes and story books to poor children. Founded in 2012, Van Thanh Blood Donors’ Club has gathered many young donors, more than 180 volunteers after 3 years of operation. Nearly 400 units of blood, 1/3 of which for urgent need, have been given. In addition, members have also donated and sought funds from benefactors to offer gifts to poor students, repair classrooms in remote areas and join clean-up days.

Ho Phuoc An, Head of Van Thanh Blood Donors’ Club, has donated blood 22 times since he was at high school. He came up with the idea to found a blood donors’ club when he recognized its life-saving benevolence.  The club came into being in 2012. Its members are Youth Union members and young people in Van Thanh Ward.

Ho Phuoc An uses Facebook to call for volunteers and connect more blood donors. Van Thanh Blood Donors’ Club has received many certificates of merit by the National Red Cross, Khanh Hoa People’s Committee and Khanh Hoa Red Cross and Nha Trang City People’s Committee, etc.

Dr. Tran Nguyen Luong, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Red Cross, says, “The club members are enthusiastic and eager to give blood at any time in need for medical treatment and emergency. Moreover, they are also propagandists for blood donation.” “All members are ready to donate blood whenever in need. The model should be expanded,” adds Dr. Nguyen Dong, Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Hospital of Tropical Diseases.

The demand for blood supply at medical institutions is on the increase. In Khanh Hoa, 99% of blood for emergency use is from blood donation. Therefore, to  acknowledge blood donors’ contribution, it is essential to have more preferential policies for donors such as hospital fee support once a year; and build a software storing blood donors’ information, including blood types, for easily searched, according to Dr. Tran Nguyen Luong, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Red Cross.
