Over the past years, local departments, agencies and communities in Khanh Hoa Province have paid great concern over child injury prevention and control. Specifically, hundreds of traffic safety law propaganda sessions and swimming classes open for thousands of children and adults annually.

Besides, some communities such as Cam Ranh, Nha Trang and Ninh Hoa have also sought donation from benefactors to fund swimming classes for kids in summer.

According to a report of Khanh Hoa Department of Labor, War Invalids & Social Affairs, child deaths from accidents decreased over the past 3 years of the implementation of the plan on preventing children from accidents in Khanh Hoa, period 2013-2015. However, the average deaths from drowning and traffic accidents each year are not on the decrease (4 cases of traffic accidents and 18 cases of drowning). Since the beginning of the year, 116 children have been reported to suffer from injuries.

Causes leading to child accidents and drowning vary and adults’ carelessness in child care is mostly blamed. Other reasons include lack of measures and equipment to assure safety, insufficient infrastructures for children’s recreational activities and life skill development; living environments with high risks of child injuries and accidents in families and society; limited funding for child injury and accident prevention, etc.

Khanh Hoa People’s Committee has issued a plan to prevent children from accidents and injuries in Khanh Hoa, period 2016-2020, focusing on decreasing child deaths from road accidents and drowning by the implementation of such models of safe houses, safe schools and safe communities, etc, according to Trinh Thi Hop, Vice-Chairperson of Khanh Hoa Department of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs.

However, the most challenge is limited awareness of law; lack of child care, protection knowledge and skills; ignorance of child injury and accident risks in families and the society; insufficient infrastructures for children’s recreation and swimming programs.

Therefore, local authorities, departments, agencies, organizations and the whole community need to join hands in promoting the effectiveness of the plan on child injury prevention and control in Khanh Hoa to keep kids safe and sound.
