Children at Khanh Hoa–Jeju Primary School are delighted to have a bookshelf in their class rooms.

At break time, some children at Van Tho 2 Primary School, Van Ninh District rush to the book reading zone situated right in the playground instead of playing shuttlecock, skipping or swinging as usual. The reading zone is 30m2 with more than 500 books, including reference books, books about life skills, quizzes, etc. donated by Van Ninh District Pioneers Organization’s Council. “I often come here to read stories at break time. Some children from other schools also come here to read books,” says a student named Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh.

Apart from Van Ninh District, many other disadvantaged communities in Khanh Hoa Province have also benefited from book donation. On the occasion of 2016-2017 new school year, Khanh Hoa Newspaper donated 8  bookshelves containing first-grade textbooks, reference books, history books, literature books, picture stories and so on to students at Son Thai Primary School, Khanh Vinh District. Earlier, Khanh Hoa Newspaper had offered 8  bookshelves with 2,000 books to children at Khanh Hoa–Jeju Primary School, Suoi Cat Commune, Cam Lam District. The “Bookshelf for kids” program aimed to help kids in disadvantaged communities to build knowledge and stimulate learning through reading.

Many charities and social organizations have joined effort to provide reading opportunities for children in disadvantaged areas. Haly Hely Group has donated nearly 1,000 books of all kinds to children at Phanxico Boarding House, Suoi Cat Commune, Cam Lam District. Vietnam Dream Group has offered 500 life skill books to Cao Van Be Junior High School, Khanh Phu Commune, Khanh Vinh District.

Besides, the Youth Unions of Khatoco Trading Company, Dong A Company and Khatoco Ostrich Breeding Center have carried out a bookshelf program at Phat Buu Pagoda orphanage in Ninh Hoa Town and so on. The book donation has provided more reading opportunities as well as stimulated reading habits among students; and therefore, such programs have been highly supported and appreciated by schools.

Tran Van Khang, Vice-Principal of Van Tho 2 Primary School says, “Our school has 3 locations. The locations No.2 and No.3 have no libraries, so children have little access to books. The children are interested in reading books in the new reading zone.” The school is still lacking in infrastructures and literacy resources, so the book donation is a valuable gift of knowledge for children, according to Dinh Nhu Thu, Principal of Son Thai Primary School.

Every year, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has plans to develop reading models namely “Green library” and “Friendly library”. “The joint effort to bring books to children in needy communities has provided them with more reading opportunities and infused them with a love of reading. I hope the model will be maintained and expanded to many other communities,” says Ha Van Thong, Chief of Primary Education Division, Department of Education & Training.
