The prolonged, constant rain and floodwaters have caused potholes on 20 sites on the National Road 1 running through Van Ninh District and Ninh Hoa District. The investor has mobilized 100 tons of mixed asphalt concrete and the execution team has mobilized 100% of packages to undertake cold mix patching, according to the project 7 Management Board, the Ministry of Transport.

Road crew have been mobilized to remove debris and slides from roadways, and clear ditches and culverts. Nguyen Thai Ha, Director of the Project Management Board of the National Road 1 running through Khanh Hoa Province says the entire road under the project basically meets the requirement. However, recent downpour together with heavy traffic volumes have impacted the road in some locations. "We have asked investors to make urgent road repair to assure traffic safety. Cold-mix patching to fill potholes is undertaken as a temporary solution until we can come back with more permanent repairs with heavy patching used in large sections which are badly damaged or deformed after rainy days.  The repair work is expected to finish before December 31," he reports.

Workers engaged in the road repair have been mobilized from all contract packages. Most of severely damaged road sections are in Ninh Hoa, Dien Khanh and Cam Lam. The project on upgrading and widening the National Road 1 has a 4-year warranty. Therefore, all the repair work cost is paid by the investor, not funded by the state budget, according to Bui Duc Huong, Vice-Director of the Project Management Board of National Road 1 running through Khanh Hoa Province, adding that “The project management board has paid the expenditure in advance to facilitate and speed up the repair work. When the repair work finishes, we will calculate the repair expenses and work with the contractors.”

Besides, the road surface has potholes in many sections on the National Road 27C (Nha Trang – Da Lat). In some places, locals have to fill the big holes up with branches to warn travelers of the danger. As a safety measure, the immediate focus is on road wash-out repair and then damaged road surface will be dealt with, according to the local road management unit.

Khanh Hoa Traffic Safety Board has directly measured the damage of the National Roads 1 and 27C after a meeting with investors, localities and road management units; and requested execution teams to accelerate the repair work on schedules. In the time to come, the board will frequently check the road repair progress to make sure the work is done safely and quickly to facilitate travel and assure traffic safety, according to Nguyen Trong Hien, Temporary Chief of Khanh Hoa Traffic Safety Board.
