The heavy rain on December 12 broke the equalizing reservoir, damaging about 30m of ditches at Hon Sen resettlement area in Vinh Hoa Ward, Nha Trang City. The floodwater inundated houses and badly destroyed 3 others. The landslide and cliff collapse also damaged 3 houses located at the foot of Hon Kho Mount and injured 2 people. Locals whose houses collapsed by the floods are currently sheltering in the local cultural house. A resident named Phan Van Hanh recalled, “When all my family were sleeping, the floodwater came in through the back doors and toppled walls. 9 of us managed to escape, leaving our property and documents washed away and buried.”

In Nha Trang City, many streets and residential areas were 1.2-1.5m flooded and cut off by floodwater. 30 households were evacuated from low zones and landslide areas at the foot of mountains. 1 house in Vinh Phuoc Ward was brought down by landslide. 30CV fishing vessel KH 01846 owned by Dang Be at To 6 Ha Ra was washed away and drowned by floodwater.


Nguyen Van Cuong, Chairman of Vinh Phuoc Ward People’s Committee says 46 households living at the foot of San Mount were evacuated to safe places on the night of heavy rain, December 12. Local residents and authorities worked together to strengthen stilt houses at To 6 and To 7, Ha Ra and got ready for evacuation plans when needed.

Phan Van Thuong’s house in Dac Loc Village, Vinh Phuong Commune, completely collapsed and luckily no death was reported. However, his orchard with dozens of mango, grapefruit and jackfruit trees together with livestock were buried by tons of debris and mud, causing VND150 million damage. His neighbor Nguyen Minh Hoang also suffered from complete farming loss after the downpours.

The landslide also blocked regional roads. The road near Vinh Phuong Commune People’s Committee was 300m flooded. Earlier on December 13, the North-South railway tracks were covered by landslide debris. 3 trains SE2, SE4 and SQN4 running from the South were stuck at Nha Trang Station while the train SE7 had to stop at Luong Son Station. 5 coaches were mobilized to carry 500 passengers from Nha Trang Station to Luong Son Station and via versa to continue their journeys. The damage repair completed at 14:15 on the same day.
 

According to a preliminary report by Nha Trang Steering Board for Flood Control, Natural Disaster Relief & Rescue, flood control plans have been implemented. The city has cooperated with border stations to warn fishermen not to anchor ships and boats to Xom Bong Bridge and Ha Ra Bridge. Troops are on standby at critical sections to deal with flood evacuation emergency.
 

In Nha Trang City, 4 houses were damaged and Khanh Hoa Power Company storehouse walls toppled. (estimated VND1 billion damage). Severe rain and flooding disrupted travel, damaging the talus at Khanh Hoa University (near Ton That Tung Street), causing landslide at Luong Dinh Cua Street, Vinh Ngoc Commune, and damage to 1 house. Low areas on the edge of Cai River were 1.5m flooded in the severe rain.
