The Submarine 87 Ba Ria-Vung Tau is a Kilo-class 636 submarine built by Russia. It is one of the 6 submarines in the purchase contract signed in 2009. Vietnam People’s Navy has received 6 Kilo-class submarines namely Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Khanh Hoa, Da Nang and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

The submarine was built at St. Petersburg-based Admiralty Shipyard. This diesel-electric 636.1 Varshavyanka submarine has a displacement of 3,000-3,950 tons and a speed of 20 nautical miles/ hour. It is able to reach a depth of 300 meters and carry 52 crew. The ship is nicknamed 'black hole' due to its very low noise emission and visibility.
