The 2016 – 2017 Khanh Hoa Oratorical Contest for Teachers of English has just taken place, providing an opportunity for teachers to meet and exchange experience to improve their professional skills.

69 shortlisted teachers, including 23 from junior high schools and 46 from senior high schools, competed in the event which included preliminary and final rounds. In the preliminary round, contestants had to find 4 key words from 4 pictures and then answered the judge’s questions related to video clips. In the final round, contestants took part in eloquence on topics presented through images and videos and answered the judge’ questions. The topics included environment, entertainment, learning English, education, family and society.
 
According to the organization board, most of the contestants showed their proficiency in listening and speaking skills as required. Particularly, some contestants’ performance was impressed with their communicative skills, fluency, coherence and accurate pronunciation. Each contestant had his or her own impressive expression and body language and some with great confidence.
 
As one of young contestants distinguishing themselves by their English fluency and rich vocabulary, Teacher Nguyen Thien Bao, Le Quy Don Gifted High School, says, “Through English lessons at schools, we help students to promote communicative skills and build a sense of confidence which are considered as important elements in English teaching innovation and quality improvement to meet the integration demand. At the contest, we can meet, exchange ideas and learn a lot from many other teachers about how to keep students motivated and actively engaged in classes. The event also helps promote self-learning to improve our professional knowledge and skills.”
 
Many schools, especially those in unfavorable conditions in mountainous areas, have been highly appreciated by their great effort in preparation for the contest. Held for the first time, the contest has helped evaluate present English teaching and learning at schools, contributing to teaching method innovation and promotion of communicative language skills, according to Le Dinh Thuan, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.
 
2 first prizes went to Bui Thi Thu Trang (Phan Sao Nam Junior High School) and Nguyen Thien Bao (Le Quy Don Gifted High School), Nha Trang City. 3 second, 7 third and 18 consolation prizes were awarded.
