Associate Professor and PhD Bui Hong Long, former Director of Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography and his collaborators have just submitted their research results on zones suitable for building artificial beaches and proposals for the protection of natural beaches on Nha Trang Bay to Khanh Hoa Department of Science & Technology. That means more beaches could be shaped for local revealers and tourists in Nha Trang City in the future when the research is applied to reality.

Beaches in Nha Trang City center are often overcrowded during tourism seasons.

Existing beaches in Nha Trang City has been formed and developed for a long time. They are all located in the city center and densely-populated areas where many social and cultural activities often take place. During tourism peak seasons, the beaches are always overcrowded with tourists and locals, so coastal water quality are surely affected. Meanwhile, beaches in the northern and southern city attract few swimmers despite convenient traffic and suitable space for tourism development. Some reasons can be blamed for include separated terrains, pointed fragments of rocks and sand erosion especially on the beach from the south of Ana Mandara to the Navy Academy and northern Chut Mount. Therefore, measures to retain sand and protect the beach are required.

The study on beach protection and development along the western Nha Trang Bay is essential to meet the community’s need, attract tourists and reduce the burden on the existing beaches in the city center. According to the research, Long and his collaborators have found 5 regions that can be protected, renovated and created to be places for beach-goers. The shore runs from Hon Rua to Dong De (no intervention), Northern Dong De to Hon Chong (artificial beach replenishment), Hon Chong to northern Cai River estuary (beach replenishment and construction); southern Cai River estuary to Ana Mandara (shore stabilization and protection) and southern Ana Mandara to northern Chut Mount (shore protection).

According to Bui Hong Long, artificial beach nourishment methods prioritize using readily available sand in the city or from neighboring areas to create new beaches, and limit constructions that may cause unexpected impacts on the environment. The research is aided by Japanese experts with experience in beach protection and development. The research is feasible as a scientific base for a scheme to protect natural beaches as well as to create, build and develop artificial beaches on Nha Trang Bay, according to Khanh Hoa Science & Technology Council.

The research will be transferred to management agencies and relevant units, namely Khanh Hoa Development Project Management Board, Khanh Hoa Department of Construction, Khanh Hoa Department of Natural Resources & Environment and Nha Trang City People’s Committee for assessment of investment and construction projects related to beach protection and development, contributing to developing beaches, boosting sustainable tourism; and promoting urban development and urbanization in the area located northern Nha Trang Bay.
