Ninh Hoa Town People’s Committee, Khanh Hoa Province has just held the 3rd children's forum with the participation of 80 children. In a friendly atmosphere, kids felt free to speak up their thoughts and ideas related to child abuse and crime control and prevention as well as children’s rights.
The event aimed to provide social skills, raise public awareness of responsibility and role towards families and society; and change the behaviors to make sure children's rights are respected, protected and fulfilled, according to Nguyen Thanh Ha, Vice-Chairman of Ninh Hoa Town People’s Committee.
The forum began with presentation on topics related to child abuse and crime control and prevention. Presentations with visual aids were made by 4 teams from the communes and wards of Ninh Hung, Ninh Da, Ninh Hiep and Ninh Son, delivering such messages as “Child sexual abuse is crime. Stop it !. Speak up to prevent child sexual abuse and so on. The presentation by Vo Thi Hoai My, Ninh Hung Commune showed that fact that there are 1,400 children under 16 years of age, most of whom are from poor families; how to identify child sexual abusers; families, schools and the society joining hands to prevent child sexual abuse, etc.
The atmosphere at the forum became more exciting with direct talk between children and town leaders. “Summer is a great time for children to relax and have fun. However, Ninh Hiep Ward in particular and Ninh Hoa Town in general have few recreational parks for children. Many of them are outdated and damaged. I hope there will be many safe and free recreational places for kids,” said a child named Thuy Duyen, Ninh Hiep Town.
The town has a planning of recreational places but lacks funding. Public participation funding is required to be invested in physical exercise zones like those in Nha Trang City, reported Nguyen Thanh Hung, Vice-Chairman of the town Division of Culture & Information. “The current widespread Internet use, depraved forms of culture and recreation, child sexual abuse and crime cases make us feel unsafe and anxious. I hope to get more gender education at school so that I can know how to protect myself from online predators, crime and abuse risks, suggesteds Vo Anh Thu, Ninh Da Commune Green Dream Club.

Gender education is included in the curricula and vary according to each education level, according to a representative of the town Division of Education. Besides giving reply to the kids’ questions , leaders of the town raised questions and gave solutions such as “If you see a kid suffering from crime what will you do?", "Suffering from abuse, your classmate feels a complex, what will you do to help her?" The town leader admitted that adults could learn a lot from kids’ thoughts and thus can recognize possible risks to take action to protect children from possible risks.
The 3rd children's forum ended with the first prize awarded to the presentation by pupils in Ninh Da Ward, second prize to Ninh Son Commune and the third prizes to Ninh Hung Commune and Ninh Hiep Ward. According to the report by Ninh Hoa Town People’s Committee, many issues and suggestions raised at the children’s forum 2016 have been solved. The Division of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs in association with local departments and organizations have organized 19 training courses for 690 village woman officials, teachers and pupils to promote the role of the family in child care and protection. 4 swimming classes have opened in summer with the participation of 107 children. Besides, since the beginning of the year, the interdisciplinary inspection visits have been undertaken at 23 internet and online game shops, etc.
