Over the past years, local authorities and departments have focused on improving material and spiritual life of the elderly. Increasing monthly allowances is among preferential policies committed to assuring a happy and healthy life of senior citizens.

103-year-old Nguyen Thi Thin, Hoang Dieu Street, Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City is happy to receive much concern and support through monthly allowances since 2013 by the government. She spends the money on tonics every day. “My children and grandchildren take care of me and the allowance is additional support for me in daily life. I’m very delighted,” says Nguyen Thi Thin.

82-year-old Tran Thi Thu, Ninh Trung Commune, Ninh Hoa Town says monthly VND300,000 allowances mean much to her. She is living alone without any children. She depends on a 100m2 vegetable garden for daily expenses. “I have no retirement pension. The construction of my house is also funded by local authorities and departments. The monthly allowances help me a lot when getting older and suffering health problems.”

At present, over 16,000 old people aged 80 and older in Khanh Hoa Province are benefiting from monthly allowances. Most of the elderly depend on their children and grandchildren. The monthly allowances have given valuable extra financial support for the aged.

The Representative Board of Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly has directed Khanh Hoa Association for the Elderly at all levels to cooperate with the sector of Labor, Ward Invalids & Social Affairs to conduct frequent surveys of those eligible for the benefit. The policy has helped the elderly to lead a happy and healthy life, helping to promote their roles in the community in many fields.

kMonthly allowances are meaningful gifts for Nguyen Thi Thin.

Under the Government’s Decree 136 dated 2013 and allowance polices for the elderly, Khanh Hoa Department of Labor, War Invalids & Social Affairs has cooperated with districts and towns to regularly update the list of the elderly eligible for the preferential policies, assuring social security for the aged, according to the leader of Khanh Hoa Department of Labor, War Invalids & Social Affairs.

Since early 2017, monthly allowances for those above 80 years of age without retirement pensions have been raised to VND300,000 from VND270,000 (the extra VND30,000 is provided by Khanh Hoa People’s Committee under Khanh Hoa People’s Committee’s decision No. 39 dated December 21, 2016).
