Many life skill courses for kids are available, providing a wide choice for parents at Khanh Hoa Children’s House and many other children’s centers during the school holiday.
In early June, Tam Viet Nha Trang Life Skill Training Center began its life skill courses for children. Besides providing 6 soft skills, the center organizes picnics for kids to Lu Cam Pottery Village, to the countryside or to learn how to make bread, etc.
Especially, the center has survival skill training programs held at Nhan Tam Tourist Site for 5 days to help kids get many general skills such as teamwork, self-dependence and self-protection. The programs have opened for 3 years and received positive feedback. This summer, Khanh Hoa Children’s House has 3 life skill courses categorized into 2 group levels and 1 master of ceremony (MC) course with 20 sessions.
Children of group 2 can pick up basic skills such as public speaking, memorization, teamwork, problem solution, self-care and so on. In the group level 1, kids are provided with knowledge and skills related to gender education, problem solution, safety skills, etc. According to Doan Thi Mai, Head of the Training Office of Khanh Hoa Children’s House, this year, the number of kids attending life skill courses at Khanh Hoa Children’s House has decreased with only 60 kids in 3 courses. One of the reasons is that many life-skill training centers have come into being.
Many life-skill centers in Nha Trang City include Vuon Uom Tai Nang Consulting & Training Center on Khuc Thua Du Street with courses on life skills, memorization techniques, etc; Soc Nhi Center on Hong Bang Street with courses on cooking, charity work and newspaper reporting skills for kids.
Parents hope their kids experience new things beyond their textbooks at school. Many kids show good changes after attending the courses. Duong Nu Tuong Vy, Le Hong Phong 2 Residential Zone says her daughter at grade 6 used to be dependent on her parents’ help in her daily activities and household chores work. After a course on self-reliance skills, she seems to be more responsible in daily activities. She can fold and arrange her clothes, arrange school things and make her daily schedule. She is also eager to help her parents with the housework. She becomes much more active than before.
The courses provide an environment where kids can learn while having fun. The fee is VND50.000 - 90.000/ 2-hour session. Besides, courses with picnics and hand-on experience cost more, even some million dongs. Some parents wonder if their children can have any changes after the short-term experiences and practice.
Essential skills kids learn in life skill courses need to be developed at home. Parents need to provide chances for kids to practice what they have learnt as well as get involved in household chores and tasks, according to Tran Thi Van Anh.
