Nha Trang City has proposed many measures to reach the target of 95% of restaurants, hotels and businesses; and 60% of houses with sewer pipes connected to the waste water treatment system of the Southern Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Nha Trang City Environmental Hygiene Improvement project, including waste water collection and treatment components has run since November 2014. The waste water treatment system has collected waste water in the center and the south of Nha Trang City and drive into the main sewerage located in the Street No. 4, into the main pump station at Binh Tan Bridge and then into the Southern Waste Water Treatment Plant in Phuoc Dong Commune. The waste water treatment plant has a designed capacity of 40,000m3/ day and night. At present, the waste water treatment capacity is 24,000 m3/ day and night but  the current waste water collection rate is still low. Therefore, Nha Trang City has boosted measures to increase the waste water connection.

According to a report by Nha Trang City People’s Committee, 310/554 of administrative agencies and non-business ones have had sewer pipes connected to the city irrigation system, accounting for 55.96%. However, the waste water collection is still low, 246/713, 34.5% of production establishments and businesses; and 676/23,380, 2.89%. of households. Reasons include high cost for waste water connection (VND16-20 million/ house), limited budget funding, etc.

Nha Trang City People’s Committee has carried out the resolution No.01 of the 16th Nha Trang City Communist Party Congress, term 2015-2020 on the target for waste water collection rate of 95% of restaurants, hotels and businesses; and 60% of houses with waste water pipes connected to the irrigation system of the Southern Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Accordingly, tertiary sewer system infrastructures will be invested in 183 streets and 583 lanes and existing irrigation system will be upgraded together with the enhanced management, inspection and supervision over waste water collection and connection. Besides, investors are required to invest in the tertiary sewer system when developing traffic construction projects.

On January 9, 2017, Khanh Hoa People’s Committee had a document to increase the loan amount up to VND16 million for households in need of funding for waste water connection. In addition, propaganda has also been boosted to urge waste water connection.

Le Huy Toan Vice-Chairman of Nha Trang City People’s Committee says, tourism and service sectors have much developed, putting much pressure on the environment. Therefore, the waste water collection plays an important role. However, the waste water connection rate of restaurants, production establishments and households is still low. Therefore, house construction is required to meet requirement for waste water connection to be licensed. Besides, street or lane irrigation systems must be connected to tertiary sewer systems to facilitate waste water connection. Relevant agencies, departments and the Bank for Social Policies are assigned to give advice related to loan provision for households in need.

Nha Trang City Environmental Hygiene Improvement project has invested in tertiary sewer systems  in 67 streets (total length of 35.5km) and 25 lanes (total length of nearly 2.8km) with 2,500 manholes in 11 wards. The Southern Waste Water Treatment Plant is to serve 14 wards with 238 streets and 608 lanes where 538 agencies, 729 businesses and production establishments and 26,402 houses are in need of waste water connection.
