On July 22, a group of physicians of the 87 Hospital took a charity medical trip to Ba Cum Nam Commune, Khanh Son District, providing free medications for 400 local residents under the Government’s “gratitude policy” and in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the War Invalids and Martyrs' Day (July 27th).

The 87 Hospital offered 8 gifts to families of social welfare in the commune, paid a visit and gave medical examination and medications to 2 old and sick people. Bo Bo Thi Binh, Suoi Me Village said, “I have received an invitation for medical check-up, but I can’t travel far because of old age and sickness. I’m so grateful to have received medical treatment and a gift at home.”

Besides giving gifts, the 87 Hospital physicians provided medical check-up and health care advice. Cao Thi Nguyen, Ca To Village said, “I have a headache and my 8-month-old baby has a cough. I hope to get help from the charity medical trip of the 87 Hospital.” An old man named Bo Bo Khuyen, Hon Gam Village says, “I will follow doctors’ advice to reduce smoking and take blood pressure medicines regularly.”

Apart from normal medical check-ups, this year, the hospital provided cancer screening examination for women in the commune. “We used to provide only obstetric examination and family planning consultancy and found many cases of gynecological inflammation. Therefore, this time, I suggested cancer screening in the program for 18 cases, 8 of which were found serious and 1 suspected of cancer. All the samples were taken and sent to the hospital for test. We also cooperated with the commune medical station to decide the best treatment to severe cases,” said Dr. Pham Thi Hanh, Deputy Director of 87 Hospital Obstetrics Department, who has joined the trip for three times.

There are 416 households with the population of 1,500, 85% of whom are Raglai people. Poor households account for 65.06 %, marginally poor households for 10.66%. Ba Cum Nam is a severely disadvantaged commune, thus all of its residents were offered medical insurance cards. However, the commune medical station has no doctors and the program sending doctors from the district medical establishments to the medical station once a week is not regularly carried out. The medical trip has contributed to improving health and living quality of local residents, according to Nguyen Minh Thanh, Chairman of Ba Cum Nam Commune People’s Committee.

Ba Cum Nam Commune and the hospital have been twinned for over 10 years. Annually, the hospital takes a medical trip, giving check-ups to more than 350 people. Severe cases are transferred to the hospital for treatment. In 2016, the hospital gave free treatment to 2 residents having traffic accidents. Besides, the hospital donated 2 beds, medication kits, surgery kits, chairs, etc to the commune medical station. Apart from gifts to families of social welfare, under the gratitude policy, the hospital offered a VND110 million grant to build 2 houses for the needy, according to Senior Lieutenant Colonel Vo Quang Trung, a political commissar of the 87 Hospital.

The activities held by group of physicians of the 87 Hospital have contributed to raising to mass mobilization effectiveness, and strengthening the solidarity between the hospital and the government and people, and improving local residents’ health. Moreover, this has also showed responsibility of young doctors towards the community. “In the time to come, the hospital plans to continue with the charity activities and professional support in treatment for some diseases at the commune medical station,” added Mai Sy Cuong.
