In recent years, school food safety has been focused by education departments. Many measures have been taken to assure food safety and nutrition at school.


14 nursery and 2 primary schools in Cam Lam District are providing day-boarding service. Food safety and hygiene has been assured. Every year, Cam Lam District Division of Education & Training issues documents to require schools to meet food safety requirement for periodical health report of cooks, kitchens examined and certified by Food Safety Bureau, food safety certification, etc. Besides, on national holidays, schools also enhance students’ awareness of food safety to help them to make safer food choice, Deputy Chief of Cam Lam District Division of Education & Training Le Anh Bang says, adding  that, “we are going to cooperate with the Health Office, Food Safety Bureau to conduct inspections of food processing at schools.”

Phuong Sai Primary School has provided day-boarding service since 2010. Detailed food safety plans have been made on processing, preparing, cooking and serving food; cleaning utensils, lunch trays and dishes, meeting the regulations by the school day-boarding sub-board, together with reliable suppliers of ingredients, especially, meat and fish products. Besides, food safety has been assured, especially during disease outbreaks. For example, pork is taken off from menus in the outbreaks of Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, etc to make sure complete food safety for children. 4 cameras have been installed in the kitchen to facilitate school leaders’ supervision over food processing and preparation. Only quality ingredients are used, according to Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, Principal of Phuong Sai Primary School, Nha Trang City.

97 primary and 183 nursery schools in Khanh Hoa Province have kitchens and 100% of  the schools in Nha Trang City, Khanh Son District and Khanh Vinh District have provided day-boarding service. Commercial kitchens at the schools have met the requirement for safe food processing, preparation and serving. Over the past years, food safety at schools has been assured with no food poisoning reported so far, says Le Dinh Thuan, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training.

A nutritionally-balanced diet software for primary schools in Khanh Hoa Province has been developed at nursery and primary schools to build a healthy eating habit, monitor diet quality and prevent obesity and malnutrition for all -round growth. Documents on food safety guidelines are issued every academic year. Schools are required to terminate contracts with unqualified food manufacturers and suppliers. In the time to come, more food safety boost effort will be made together with promoting the use of the nutritionally-balanced diet software to assure food safety and nutrition, according to Le Dinh Thuan.
