The Ministry of Justice in cooperation with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) held an international seminar on rights to acquire nationality and reduction of statelessness on September 18-19.
The event focused on discussion on the implementation of the Law on Vietnamese Nationality 2008 and special regulations on birthright citizenship in Vietnam; naturalization of stateless people in Vietnam; international standards and regulations of the Law on Vietnamese Nationality on statelessness prevention and reduction; nationality laws and other regulations related to immigration management and residence of foreigners in Vietnam; challenges related to dual nationality, Vietnamese citizenship renouncement and naturalization; advantages and disadvantages of naturalization of children whose parents are Vietnamese citizens and foreigners, etc.
Reportedly, the Law on Vietnamese Nationality 2008 was passed on November 13, 2008 and came into effect on July 1, 2009. Suggestions at the seminar will be reported to local authorities for consideration.
