Over 4 years of implementation, a project to develop healthcare services in coastal and island areas has gained satisfactory results through many practical medical services.


Under the guidance of Khanh Hoa People’s Committee on the development of the project to develop healthcare services in coastal and island areas till 2020. Since 2014, epidemic prevention and control teams have been strengthened to get ready for medical trips to islands, enhance inspection and supervision over labor safety in marine economic sectors, and annually send medical staff to support health care on the Spratly Islands.


Besides, Khanh Hoa Traditional Medicine & Rehabilitation Hospital has successfully developed a high pressure oxygen therapy in the treatment of diving related medical conditions; medical stations in coastal areas in Nha Trang City. Cam Ranh City, Ninh Hoa Town, Van Ninh District, Cam Lam District have maintained sustainably national commune medical criteria in coastal communities, improved health care services in medical sub-stations in island areas; invested in first aid kits, given medical treatment and counseling to residents in coastal and island areas; prepared for medical emergencies; instructed the equipment of first-aid supplies on off-shore fishing boats, according to Bui Xuan Minh, Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Health.

Under the project, Military Hospital 87 has regularly sent its officials to international workshops and courses on maritime medicine. At present, the hospital is equipped with a telemedicine system for the connection with medical stations on the Spratly Islands and a maritime medicine faculty has been established. A hospital helicopter airport is expected to be built to receive patients from the Spratly Islands, says Captain Trinh Viet Thang, Director of Military Hospital 87. In 2014, the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment & Development of Vietnam donated first aid kits, lifebuoys, medicines and some medical devices totaling VND100 million to Van Thanh Commune Station; Khai Luong and Ninh Hoa medical sub-stations, Van Ninh District; and Binh Lap medical sub-station, Cam Ranh City.

Khanh Hoa People’s Committee allocated more than VND3.1 billion , period 2014-2016 to medical equipment to meet health care needs in island communes, Truong Sa Town and over VND18  billion to medical insurance cards. In addition, the Vietnam Maritime Rescue Cooperation Center (VNMRCC) region IV has built a model of fishing villages with traffic safety in some areas such as Vung Ngan, Vinh Nguyen Ward; and Thanh Dat Village, Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang City. Some medical sub-stations on the islands of Diep Son, Dam Mon and Ninh Tan in Van Ninh District and Binh Hung in Cam Ranh City are under construction and upgrade. However, some disadvantages have remained such as medical staffing shortage at district and commune-level medical stations, limited maritime medicine training, lack of medical equipment, etc.


The purposes of the project in the period 2017-2020 include professional development training in maritime medicine given to 70% of hospitals in coastal areas; 100% of coastal medical centers with full capacities of preventive check-ups and counseling; Truong Sa Hospital with 30 beds and the Coastal Emergency & Medical Care Center in charge of remote emergency support for Military Hospital 87; Emergency Center 115 with maritime emergency service and medical care cooperation and emergency training for 100 of ship owners; 100% of commune medical meeting medical criteria in coastal communities; and 100% of ships and ocean liners fulfilling international regulations on maritime medicine.
