Robotics 2017 course held by Le Quy Don Gifted High School is one of activities in preparation for the 2017-2018 Provincial Scientific & Technical Contest for high schools. Starting early this summer, the extracurricular activity has drawn many students and ex-students, especially prize-winners of scientific & technical contests.

Bach Gia Khiem, a 12th-grader, says “Participating in the event, I have an opportunity to widen my knowledge of electronic spare parts, programming and know how to assemble remote-controlled cars. This is a great chance for me to learn, experience and promote my own creativeness.”

Reportedly, since 2015, Le Quy Don Gifted High School has organized classes on electronics, electro mechanics, programming, scientific and technical creativeness; field trips to waste treatment systems in Nha Trang City; and introduced provincial Science & Technical Contest, Vietnam Science & Engineering Fair  (ViSEF) and the International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). Accordingly, participants were provided specialized knowledge about IT, electronics, automation and many other sectors.

Over the past years, scientific and technical extracurricular activities have been organized, providing general and detailed knowledge necessary for the research procedure from the beginning to the final stage to have finished products. Much time and funding has been spent. This is a start-up activity to inspire young people's interest, confidence, passion in science and technology, says Teacher Hoang Ba Kim, Head of Physics Division.

The Science & Technical Contest for high schools (for students from class 8 to class 12) is an official event annually held by the Ministry of Education & Training. Winners of the competition can get the same privileges as in the Excellent Student Contest. The Science & Technical Contest has contributed to teaching and learning innovation, student evaluation and teaching targets setting (learning from experiment, experience and learning to get life skills).

The 2017 – 2018 provincial Science & Technical Contest for high school students include 22 sectors, namely animal science, social science and behavior; biochemistry, biology, health science, molecular cell biology; earth science and environment; physics and astronomy, robots and smart machines, etc. Each institution can send up to 6 projects; Le Quy Don Gifted High School and divisions of education & training not more than 12 projects. Applications to the provincial competition are sent to Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training by November 11.

To prepare for this year’s Science & Technical Contest, since the end of the 2016-2017 academic year, Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has required its affiliations to build suitable scientific research plans for students. The development of scientific and technical clubs at schools is to provide opportunities for students to share knowledge, skills and researched products.

According to a leader of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training, to promote the effectiveness of the competition, schools need to make good use of competent and experienced teachers’ capacities in scientific research and integrate student research guidance in meetings; assign teachers to discuss problems arising from actual study process in class meetings, school meetings, extracurricular activities, hands-on experience activities to inspire ideas on research projects for students. Besides, schools need to cooperate with educational institutions, colleges, institutes, centers for science & technology, Khanh Hoa Department of  Science & Technology, Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), Youth Union, scientists, students’ parents, etc in instructing and evaluating students’ scientific projects; providing technical and infrastructure support for students’ participation in scientific research and competitions.
