Typhoon Damrey has left the entire Tri Nguyen Island, Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City without power for nearly half a year. 2 electric generators, 500kVA, have just been used as temporary blackout solution provided by Khanh Hoa Power Company.

Early half a year without electricity, thousands of families on Tri Nguyen Island seemed to be isolated from the world outside. They were unable to communicate with relatives and friends. Do Ngoc Thi, Quarter 3, Tri Nguyen Island says, “The widespread power outage occurred as a result of storm damage to electricity transmission infrastructure. All the residents have to live without power. How uncomfortable it is to be out of power, especially for old people and children who have lessons to study in the evening. All communications are cut off.”

“At present, there are about 3,000 residents on the island. Besides, there are 2,000 temporary residents in tourist sites and on ships, so the number of residents on the islands reaches 6,000. The power outage for such a long time has caused difficulties in daily life, business and production, especially for seafood and tourism businesses. Some have to temporarily shut down until the electricity supply is restored,” says Phan Van Minh, Head of Quarter 3.

Reportedly, submarine high pressure power cables, 1,203m, from the mainland to Tri Nguyen Island were cut off in the typhoon. The broken wire is 176m from the coast. The repair work has been obstructed by the inclement weather with strong wind and high waves.

Khanh Hoa Power Company together with the Central Power Corporation brought 2 electric generators which have just been used to serve APEC in Da Nang to provide electricity for residents and businesses on Tri Nguyen Island.
