Typhoon Damrey has caused massive damages and losses to numerous students’ families. Many schools, individuals and organizations have joined relief effort to help students to alleviate the sufferings, weather the difficulties and pursue education.
A pupil named Tran Ngoc Vy, Tran Hung Dao Junior High School, Nha Trang City is from a poor family. Her father died young, leaving her mother behind with the burden of taking care of 5 children and 1 nephew. Her family is facing greater challenges when the recent typhoon destroyed her house and properties. The house of a pupil named Nguyen Phan Anh Thu, Ninh Xuan 2 Primary School, Ninh Hoa Town collapsed in the recent typhoon, which also left her parents injured. The fathers of Vo Tuong Nguyen, Ninh Ha Primary School, Ninh Hoa Town and Nguyen Bao Quoc Trung, Ly Thai To Junior High School, Nha Trang City were killed by the devastating typhoon, leaving great grief and misfortune to the bereaved.
Therefore, this year, Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund and "For beloved Spratly Islands" Club have offered 385 scholarships and relief gifts earlier than previous years in order to provide urgent aid to the victims in Khanh Hoa Province. The beneficiaries include ethnic minority students, children of national sea defense soldiers and students with houses badly damaged by the powerful typhoon across Khanh Hoa Province.
“The typhoon has caused uncountable damages and losses to Khanh Hoa education sector as well as students’ families. The donation can be seen as practical help to encourage the students to get through the grief, overcome difficulties and continue schooling,” says Truong My Hoa, former State Vice-President, Chairman of Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund, Director of the "For beloved Spratly Islands" Club.
Mien Dong Technology University has paid a visit to 4 students with severe home damage at Le Hong Phong High School, To Van On High School, Huynh Thuc Khang High School and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Van Ninh District. Through Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training, a retired education official in Ho Chi Minh City together with his collogues has donated and added to scholarships worth VND1 million each offered to 25 primary school children at Xuan Son, Van Phuoc 2 and Van Tho 2, Van Ninh District. Earlier, a delegation of the Vietnam Ministry of Education & Training and the national Trade Union had granted VND500 million donated by education and teaching staff nationwide to repair schools and provide aid to affected students. Many individuals, organizations and agencies have called for the donation of school supplies, clothes and cash to typhoon victims through a variety of channels. Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training and Divisions of Education & Training have also paid visits and offered relief gifts to the students.
“Thanks to the concern and support of local authorities, departments, agencies and benefactors, students have received much material and spiritual support to recover from the typhoon and get back to school,” says Vo Ba Phung, Vice-Chief of Cam Lam District Division of Education & Training.
The typhoon has made many students homeless. They have to live in temporary shelters, tents or stay with their relatives. Some have even lost their parents and no longer received parental care. In the time to come, Khanh Hoa Department of Department of Education & Training will raise more funds to offer more assistance expected at VND5 million each to severely disadvantaged families. Hopefully, more people and organizations will join the burden-sharing effort to help the children stabilize their lives and continue schooling after the destructive typhoon, according to the leader of Khanh Hoa Department of Department of Education & Training.
