The Water Resource Law 2012 and Decree No. 43/2015/ND-CP defining the establishment and management of water source protection corridors. Khanh Hoa Province will set up landmarks of water source protection corridors from 2018.
The establishment and management of water source protection corridors play an important role in the management and protection of water resources. Water source protection corridors are land limits along or surrounding water sources defined by local authorities.
Amid the global climate change and increasing water exploitation and use, Khanh Hoa is at water resource degradation risk. Water source sustainable development and effective use and protection have become urgent to satisfy the water source protection requirements and concurrently harmonize the lawful rights and interests of related organizations and individuals.
It is essential to make a list of water sources for which water source protection corridors shall be established and used as a basis for identification of the scope of water source protection corridors, helping localities take initiative in water source use.
Functions of water source protection corridors include protecting the bank stability, preventing and combating the encroachment upon land around water sources; preventing and combating activities threatening to pollute and degrade water sources; protecting, conserving and developing the aquatic ecological system and natural animal and plant species adjacent to water sources; creating space for cultural, sports, entertainment and recreation activities, preserving and developing the historical, cultural, tourist and belief values related to water sources.
Under Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee, Khanh Hoa Department of Natural Resources & Environment has provided consultancy on making a list of water sources of which water source protection corridors will be established in Khanh Hoa. Accordingly, a survey of water sources of which water source protection corridors need to be established has been conducted. Suggestions on action program framework to manage the water resource exploitation and use has been made. Khanh Hoa People’s Committee has approved a list of water sources of which water source protection corridors need to be established in Khanh Hoa Province, period 2018 – 2022, including 21 irrigation and hydropower reservoirs where landmarks shall be set up and 27 river sections of which water source protection corridors will be established.
The setting up landmarks of water source protection corridors is expected to begin 2018 and last until 2022. Based on the social economic growth, the list of water sources of which water source protection corridors need to be established will be updated every year, says Hoang Anh Hao, Chief of Water of Meteorology Office, Khanh Hoa Department of Natural resources & Environment.
