2017- 2018 Scientific & Technical Contest for high school students took place on December 12-13, drawing many young participants. The event provided an opportunity for students to show their interest, excellence and promote creativeness in scientific research.

Creative insights

Many students showed their creative insights with unique solutions to everyday problems and innovative products such as a sowing and watering robot; black soap made from coal and ash from straw and coffee grounds; vinegar and pesticides produced from natural ingredients to help protect the environment; automatic solar-energy based garbage collection system in river via the Internet; organic vegetable tower model, self-protection belts against sexual abuse, multi-purpose sticks for the visually impaired, swimming pool safety plastic nets for rural children, etc.

Student Mai Van Thien, Le Thanh Liem Junior High School, Nha Trang City said, “In June, I and my friend named Vo Pham Thi Tho started to draft an idea about a wrist-based heart rate monitor which also sends messages about health and reminds users to take medicines on time. The device has been tested on humans successfully. We hope our device will improve in the future to be used at medical institutions.”

Shortlisted from the school and city-level rounds, the participants showed great effort to learn and apply what they have learnt at school to produce efficient products. The contest was a rewarding experience for students to promote their passion for science, according to Teacher Bui Thuc Thien, Thai Nguyen Junior High School, Nha Trang City.

According to the organizing board, this year’s contest received entries with higher quality compared with previous years. All the participating units made thorough preparation with many innovative products. This showed scientific and technical research development among high school students. Many schools such as Le Quy Don Gifted High School, Ngo Gia Tu High School, Hoang Van Thu High School, Ly Tu Trong High School, Phan Boi Chau High School, Tran Binh Trong High School, Vo Van Ky Junior High School, Thai Nguyen Junior High School, etc made much effort, bringing to the contest practical and creative products and projects.

Facilitating scientific research among students

Tran Quang Man, Vice-Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training highly valued the young researchers’ presentation. They showed confidence, passion for science, spirit of innovation and ingenuity, and effective communication skills through their presentation and replies to the jury’s questions. The students were also eager to get suggestions to improve their products. High award-winners were honored for their intelligence, creativeness and innovation. Apparently, we cannot expect exhaustive research from students due to their limited real-life experience, knowledge and research conditions. However, the organizing board highly appreciated the students' great effort in scientific and technical research.

Khanh Hoa Department of Education & Training has suggested launching the next year event earlier. Accordingly, the purpose, meaning and content of the contest should be propagandized through discussion during class meetings, flag ceremonies and extracurricular activities to inspire research ideas among students and create favorable conditions for students and teachers to attend scientific conferences, workshops and apply research results into reality.

The 2017 – 2018 Scientific & Technical Contest for high school students drew 152 projects in 16 sectors from 34 units, including 26 schools (97 projects, 148 participants) and 8 Divisions of Education & Training (55 projects, 98 participants). Special and general awards were presented and 6 excellent projects were chosen to advance to the national round.
